Spelunking in Calinawan Cave - Tanay Rizal

Writer's picture: sayaramaesayaramae

An interesting story was told by our tour guide. He said that Calinawan Cave was used as a hideout by our ancestors against the Japanese during World War 2. This is where they realized that they need to fight for our freedom against the enemy, thus named the place "Kalinawan".

Today, Calinawan cave is famous for being a filming spot for both local and international films. Here is where they shot some of the scenes in La Luna Sangre, Bagani and a lot more.

I honestly didn't research about the cave when we visited. We made this as our side trip before going to Daranak Falls. So I have no idea what awaits me here.

We already tried Lumiang-Sumaging Cave Connection in Sagada, which for me is the most extreme spelunking I've tried so far. But exploring Calinawan Cave gives me a different experience.

It will only take less than an hour to finish the cave. As you move along you have to be very careful because it's really dark inside. We did watched our heads all the time because of rock formations.

We did enjoyed the stalagmites and stalactites as we move inside. Please be mindful not to touch any of those.

I never expected that there's a need for us to crawl in some parts of the cave.

Some tourists only go as far as level 2, but we decided to explore the cave up until level 5. There is already level 6 and 7 but it's still not accessible as of writing.

How to get there:

From Metro Manila, take a van from EDSA Crossing to Tanay Central Terminal. Travel time takes at least one-and-a-half hour and fare is at around P70. From the terminal, ride a tricycle to take you to Calinawan Cave. Average rate for tricycle is P150, maximum of five passengers.

Rates:

Php 50.00 entrance fee

Php 800 tour guide for a group
